Stewart Watt & Co.
Solicitors & Estate Agents
Straightforward, practical advice given to you by friendly professionals.
The Firm of Stewart Watt & Co. was set up in 1979 by Charles Stewart Watt. The firm is now separately owned and run in partnership by Jennifer Mair and her daughter, Zara Mair.
Jennifer is a graduate of Edinburgh University and specialises in Residential and Commercial property as well as using her vast practical and legal experience dealing with Family and Employment Law.
Zara, on the other hand, looks after all our Private Client work as well as making sure the firm continues to run smoothly and people know about us. Zara is a graduate of both the University of St. Andrews and Edinburgh University and is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
Alan Lesley, Technical Services Manager
I have always found Jennifer to be fully professional and knowledgeable in dealing with all our property matters. They are helpful and respond to our requests quickly.
Leeanne Bradley, Financial Advisor
I recently used Zara’s services to set up a Will for my husband and I. It is something I had been meaning to do for some time and I hadn’t realised how important it was to get this in place as quickly as possible. Zara provided us with advice in a simple, efficient and professional manner and made the whole process very straightforward. I would not hesitate to recommend her services to my friends, family and clients.
I would like to thank Zara for all her advice and assistance, both with the discharge of my mortgage and with preparing my Will. Particularly with the latter, her relaxed manner and conversational approach made planning my estate much less stressful than I had anticipated. I would happily recommend her to others looking either for help with estate planning or with property matters
Property is perhaps the area where most people will come in direct contact with the law. It can be complex and massive problems can be avoided in the future if things are completed in the right way today.
Jennifer has a huge amount of experience in the Edinburgh and Lothian's property market. She will help you market your current house in the most effective way as well as making sure buying your new home is as smooth as possible. Getting things right for our clients today is vital to us. Only then will they have peace of mind knowing their property transaction is watertight. Here's a little more detail about the areas of property law we get involved in:
Buying: whether you're a 1st time buyer or looking to expand your property portfolio
Selling: we provide a fulll estate agency service and can deal with the conveyancing work which follows
Mortgages: whether you are taking out a mortgage for the first time, re-mortgaging, using the government's Help To Buy Scheme or releasing equity, we can help!
Discharging Mortgages once the secured loan has been paid off
Negotiating and preparing Loan Agreements between private individuals
Sale and purchase of small business premises and ongoing businesses
We offer a wide range of advice and services to help our clients either prepare for the unexpected or cope with it, if something has already happened.
The most important thing for us, whether we're helping a client prepare for the future or deal with the unexpected, is to make sure we understand what has to be achieved. We work with our clients, getting to know them so the legal solutions we put in place do what's required.
But there's more to it than that. We're often working with our clients as they are experiencing difficult or challenging events. We are sensitive in our approach, always putting ourselves in our clients' shoes to help them through what can often be difficult situations. There are lots of things we do, but here's a selection of some of the work completed for our private clients:
Providing expert legal advice on Wills
Estate and tax planning to help mitigate Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax bills
Providing advice on the creation, running and termination of trusts - used to help protect assets and/or beneficiaries
Advising the elderly and helping them prepare for the future including benefits entitlement, care options and protecting their assets from nursing home fees
Creating Powers of Attorney, advising on incapacity issues and applying for Guardianship and Intervention Orders from Court
Administering a dead person's estate is known as an executry. We can help at this difficult time, whether there's a Will in place or not
